Some of our team had the honour of attending the Transformation Community & ESG Conference in August 2025 in Johannesburg and presenting an exhibition of a selection of the photographs collected through our participatory research with conservationists between 2021 and 2025.
Through the method of photovoice, men and women on the frontlines of biodiversity conservation became the photographers, sharing their intimate experiences of working in the difficult conservation terrains of the Lowveld & Garden Route (South Africa), and the Top End (Australia).
In conversations with research participants, we have curated a collection of photographs and accompanying narratives. The exhibition explores personal and affective insights of hope and despair in the face of the rupture of humanity’s relationships with nature. We are invited to engage in the tensions of protecting diversity of life, in a sector that is struggling to diversify itself.
The ‘in-person’ exhibition at the TC/ESG 2025 was part of multiple other artistic and creative installations part of this transdisciplinary conference programme that attracted more than 400 sustainability scholars and practitioners. Additionally, we presented a session during the conference programme during which we invited session attendees to reflect on the diverse perspectives included in the exhibition and the implications for transforming conservation practice.
Thank you to all who contributed photographs and narratives to this exhibition and to the conference attendees for insightful discussions.
The selection of photographs printed for the in person exhibition, are also part of the larger and continually evolving exhibition of photographs on our website. We welcome any feedback on this exhibition. We also invite any conservationists who have participated in interviews with us – if you would like to add photographs to the exhibition – please reach out to us! Also, any conservationists who would like to be part of the interviews are encouraged to reach out!
